2001 Breeders' Cup Preview

The following sections list starters for the 2001 Breeders' Cup in order of post position.   The information provided includes the name of the contender, the horse's best Performance Figure (PF) when among the top three finishers in a 2001 graded stakes race run under conditions reasonably similar to the Breeders' Cup race, the highest class of race that the horse has won on the same surface as the Breeders' Cup race (Grade/Group 1, Grade/Group 2, Grade/Group 3, Listed, Allowance, Maiden), the sire, the sire line (identified as the next closest direct male line chef-de-race), the broodmare sire, the broodmare sire line, the sire/broodmare sire bloodline cross (where P = Phalaris and NP = non-Phalaris), the Dosage figures, the jockey, the trainer and the owner.  For the juvenile races, the sire's AWD (average winning distance in open stakes) and the broodmare sire's AWD are also included.  The presumption concerning AWD is that horses aiming for the older division races have already demonstrated a suitability to the race conditions whereas the juveniles may not have.  An asterisk (*) after the AWD indicates the average is based on less than five races.  For comparison, the history of Dosage in the Breeders' Cup can be found here.  Selections are in no particular order and reflect either a perceived ability or value.
